Victories come in all shapes and sizes and so it was to be on a hot and sunny June afternoon on Witley Green.

Captain Westwood won the toss and elected to field relying on the sound judgement that "we like chasing".

Witley traditionally field a strong side with more than a smattering of League players but their top order got very little change out of a miserly opening bowling attack shared by Freddie Hodgson (8 overs, one for six) and Robin Harris (8 overs one for thirty-three). Having established such a tight strangle-hold on the Witley top-order, the opening bowlers passed the baton to Messrs. Wootton, Westwood and Van Oppen (C). All three bowled exceptionally well with the honours going to Wootters who took a career-best five for thirty-three off 8 overs. "If only Jake were here to witness it" he was heard muttering as he lift the field with the merest hint of a smile emerging in the corner of his mouth.

With Witley restricted to 99 all out off only 30 of the allotted 40 overs, the Mariners sensed a sweet victory was within their grasp.

But Witley's reputation as a play-hard; sledge-loud team has been well earned. They immediately set about their business in the field and Mariner wickets fell worryingly often. At 41-6 and with the "Engine Room" back in the hutch things were beginning to look bleak but a gritty stand between Chris Evans (30) and Mark Wootton (16) dragged the Mariners back into the game.

The finish was tense as runs became hard to find and the Witley main-stream bowlers came back for their final overs but a plucky eighth-wicket stand between Robin Harris (9*) and Eddie Holliday (0*) edged it for AMCC in the 38th over.

With victory secured the teams repaired to the Legion Club where Wootters bought his 5-fer Jug and where the Ancient Mariners entered the digital world of Social Media with the establishment of a group chat on Wattsapp.....
The President looked on sceptically.
